Bladder Cancer
Bladder Cancer Treatment Options
Bladder cancer is becoming increasingly common in the United States. Fortunately, rates of survival are also increasing thanks to constantly improving detection equipment and treatment options like those that are available at Mountainside Hospital.
|
| Diagnosis |
Minimally-Invasive Cystoscopy: In this procedure, the doctor inserts a cystoscope through the urethra and into the bladder to detect any signs of cancer. Our minimally invasive technique ensures the most comfortable and accurate procedure possible.
|
| Surgical Options |
Cystoscopic Removal: Best performed when the cancer is in its early stages, this bladder-sparing procedure uses a cystoscope to remove just the tumor.
Radical Cystectomy and Illeal Conduit: This surgery removes the entire bladder and diverts the normal flow or urine through a segment of the small bowel to a collection bag outside of the abdomen. This is often the best option for patients with advanced bladder cancer as there may be substantial risk of progression to muscle-invasive cancer in such cases. Talk to your doctor about the risks involved with this procedure and the methods of urinary diversion.

| Non-surgical Options |
Chemotherapy: Drugs that may be taken intravenously or in pill form are used to destroy cancer cells.
Intravesical Therapy: Intravesical therapy puts a liquid form of chemotherapy directly into the bladder through a tube that is inserted into the urethra. Through this method, the patient can avoid many of the unpleasant side effects associated with traditional chemotherapy.
Radiation Therapy: High-energy x-rays are used to destroy cancer cells and shrink tumors |
