Kidney Cancer
With timely diagnosis and treatment, kidney cancer can be cured. Mountainside offers two very successful treatment options for kidney cancer. |
| Surgical Options |
Radical Nephrectomy: This procedure removes the entire cancerous kidney and the surrounding tissue. Depending on the stage of cancer, this procedure may be performed laparoscopically. The doctors of Mountainside Hospital are on the forefront of laparoscopic surgery, a new, highly successful technique that is emerging as the standard of care for those with kidney cancer. This surgery is more desirable than traditional surgery because of the relatively small incisions needed to insert telescopes and remove the kidney. In addition, patients who undergo laparoscopic radical Nephrectomy experience less postoperative pain and have a shorter hospital stay and shorter recovery time than those who have had an open radical Nephrectomy. Not all patients are candidates for laparoscopic Nephrectomy, so be sure to ask you doctor if this is a suitable option for you.
Partial Nephrectomy: Partial Nephrectomy safely and effectively removes small renal tumors, while preserving the healthy remainder of the kidney. This increasingly successful and common procedure has shown to be as effective as removal of the entire kidney in patients with small tumors. |
